Hello Les,

If it's a year since you last posted a picture, it must be at least three years since I last visited this site and even longer since I posted an image! I used to be quite active here but, somehow or other, I seemed to get seduced by TE and took my loyalties there. However, TE has been having a lot of technical problems of late (what's new?) so I thought I'd have dekko over here on TL.

Anyway, here I see what I think must be the most beautiful motor car ever built - a Type 35 Bugatti - and I think you've captured it rather nicely. I know that it's traditional to "pan" such shots to keep the vehicle sharp against an apparently moving background but from your viewpoint (and maybe you didn't have the option of changing that) it would have been impossible to "pan" when the car was coming almost directly at you. So, all in all, I think you've done pretty well and you've certainly caught the impression of speed as intended.

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Jean,

Now here's a funny thing. What with all the problems we've all been having with the TE website - "viewed" counters not working and all that - I've no longer been receiving emails when I either receive a critique or a favourite member of mine (such as you) posts a picture on TE. But, curiously enough, I'm now starting to receive email notification of my favourite members' posts on TL - I've not received them for quite a while! I wonder what on Earth is going on or if these sites will ever be fixed?

So, duly notified of this delightful posting of yours, I'd better have a proper gander at it and write a critique. And at the same time apologise to anyone here on TL who might remember me too - sadly, I think it must be at least three years since I was at all active here! :o(

When I first saw your thumbnail of this picture I thought this might have been real Forget-me-nots but now, having looked at the full size image and read your note, I see that these are rather lovely ceramic ones - just like the poppies that were at the Tower of London - I bought one of those and it sits in a tall vase downstairs and reminds me of my great uncle Alfred (whom, despite my advancing years I never knew) who perished at the Somme in August, 1916.

Your photograph does indeed show an impressive sight and I'm sure it also must be lovely to marvel at the sight of the full thousand of these lovely ceramic flowers. A fine close shot, well composed and with lovely light and fine vibrant colours too. And excellent details and sharpness throughout.

Lovely!

Kind Regards,

John.

P.S. Perhaps I should get back again to TL - what do you think? Do you have more fun here or on TE?

Hello Joy,

Wow! It worked!!!! Hee, hee, hee!

In fact, after what I'd written to you, I thought I'd try to upload a pnaorama of my own just to show you - I raked through some pictures taken earlier this year and I've uploaded one too. But now I come back again and look at this and it's absolutely wonderful! You must be fair chuffed with yourself - and rightly so!

The details in the large picture are absolutely stunning and the composition is far, far better than mine. Lovely colours too and the exposure is spot-on!

Very well done indeed!

Kindest Regards,

John.

P.S. Maybe I should come back to TL - this must be the first time I've been on here for over a year as TE seems to take up an awful lot of time - very difficult to keep both going as you will have found too. Thanks again for reminding me about TL again!!

Hello Joy,

This is a fine photograph but the smaller version is a lot better than the larger one which does lack some sharpness.

I think you are still having some difficulties with the technicalities of uploading full-size panoramas. So let's see if we can get you on the right tracks! Here goes:

First of all, remember the original guidelines regarding any picture you put on TL or TE (or TN for that matter): the longest side must not exceed 800 pixels and the shortest side must not be less than 250 pixels. Right. Now, if you want to be given the option of uploading a full-size panormama-type picture, the guidelines state that the smaller picture must have a ratio of at least 2.5:1. That means that if your longest side is 800 pixels, the shortest side must be less than 320 pixels (which it is in this case but not in the case of your last upload - and that's why you didn't get the option last time of uploading a larger image). O.K.?

So that, essentially, means that if your "smaller" picture is going to be 800 pixels wide, its height must lie between the limits of 251 and 319 pixels. Then you will be given the option of upoading a larger one.

I find that the best thing to do is to work on your larger image first and remember that it can be up to 4,000 pixels wide (and not less than 800 pixels wide either - but you wouldn't be uploading a "large" picture less than that anyway) though must not have a file size bigger than 400Kb. You can make your large image from just one picture or from a "merge" of several using the "Photomerge" facility in Photoshop Elements if you wish. Work on that picture first and do all your editing and sharpening and so on and save it somewhere - to your desktop say - and label it as "Big" or "Large" or something like that. Then go back to your original and shrink the image down to the size you want for your smaller picture, edit and sharpen it as usual. Then you can upload the small one and the larger one after.

The other interesting thing to remember is that the "large" picture doesn't have to be exactly the same as the small one! I've been looking at my own pictures on TL and I don't think I've ever uploaded a large panorama picture here, but I have a few on TE. This one is a simple panorama shot, a stitch of seven separate JPEG shots in Photomerge - if you right click on the picture, you will see that the small one is 800 x 256 pixels and the larger one is 2500 x 800 pixels - both exactly the same ratio - and the very same picture, in fact.

However, if you look at this one, the picture was so wide and so "skinny" that I had to add a chunky frame to the small version to allow it to be accepted in the first place - once that was uploaded, the large one uploaded without a problem!

Good Luck!

Kind Regards,

John.

This is a beautiful photograph of what I believe must be one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.

The exposure, lighting, colours and sharpness are superb. Your processing work is amazing - it has been done so tastefully and expertly that there is no hint whatsoever that this is not exactly "as seen".

Wonderful!

Hello Jean,

I like this shot! It was not an easy one to take and, in particular, not an easy one for which to attain the correct exposure. Cameras, left to their own (automatic) devices, will shun bright whites like this and expose them as mid grey. But you have kept the whites white and still we can see the beautiful blue sky through the skylight windows and also fully appreciate the colours and shapes of those interesting gourds.

Good composition too with lots of strong diagonal lines and triangles.

Lovely!

Kind Regards,

John.

I think that this one works very well indeed in black and white. The tones and contrasts are excellent and, as you say, the walkers at top left are an added bonus, adding scale to the image and making the viewer realise the enormous size of these rocks.

Very sharp and clear too.

Hello Rew,

Gosh, I feel so sorry for Marinella - I bet you were wrapped up in scarves, hat and warm jacket while this poor girl was shivering from cold. But she has put on a brave face and one would hardly know from her expression that she was feeling the cold.

A lovely shot with Marinella beautifully portrayed against the lovely soft blue misty background. The line of the fence adds a strong diagonal lead-in to the picture too.

That 85mm lens, I believe, is a real cracker.

John.

Hello Brian,

This is truly wonderful!

You have done a fabulous job of work in Photoshop here and the resulting image has been worth all the effort. It must have taken you ages!

This is a beautiful picture and, I think, really shows the spirit of the Spitfire, to my mind one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.

Excellent!

I really must make a note of the steps you went through in Photoshop and have a go myself sometime at something like this.

Hello Rew,

This picture deserves a lot more acclaim than it has thus far received. The lighting and composition are wonderful, especially the backlighting on the girl. The frost and mist below the bridge add greatly to the atmosphere and you have taken advantage of the reflection of light off the frosty ground very well.

Nice to see the map reference too - not many of us appear to add that feature but I love to see exactly where a picture has been taken.

Excellent!

Hello Robert,

This one is a Stunner!

I'm not normally terribly much in favour of HDR pictures as I think most of them are "overcooked" and look unrealistic. But this one has been done very symathetically indeed and I like it a lot. You have also described well how you have desaturated the bright yellow of the crane in the background - a very wise move as this might have dominated th picture.

The composition is just perfect and the wide-angle view and the high position of the track make 4953 stand out proudly in the frame. Even the red hosepipe on the platform adds to the composition - yes, seriously, I think it does! I'm sure that this is an image which "Pitchford Hall"'s owners would dearly cherish.

Beautiful!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Dean,

For a first attempt at this sort of wildlife photography, this is a stunning picture!

This is something I have not tried seriously at all but it's something I'd love to be able to do. I find that trees, hills and lakes are less camera-shy and easier to capture!

I'm really interested in how you went about taking this photograph. As far as I know, your Sigma 70 - 300mm lens does not have stabilisation, so I presume, because your shutter speed was 1/50 sec., that you used a tripod. Even at 300mm, you could not have been that far away from your subject - did you use a "hide" or take the picture from a garden shed window or did you fire the shutter remotely?

The sparrow might be humble, but this picture certainly is not. In fact, sparrows I find lovely little birds and, of course, they are much less common nowadays than they used to be.

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Bev,

A beautiful country scene, peaceful and relaxing and clear, sharp and full of detail. The lead in from the long, regular fence is just perfect, especially with the little gate inviting the viewer to take a walk into the fresh green field to capture a closer view of the village.

I disagree with Mushtaq about contrast and saturation. In my opinion, too many pictures of this kind here and on TE have suffered from "overcooked" contrast and saturation. This picture is totally believable and, I am sure, represents pretty much exactly what you saw when you took the picture.

Oh, just a couple of comments. First one - you say you took this picture in early morning but your exif data states that it was taken at nine minutes past four in the afternoon!

Second one - you spelled your name wrongly! Does that mean that in years to come, this picture could be a very valuable collector's item?

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Nigel,

This is a very fine effort for your first ever photograph! And very well scanned too - I presume that it was scanned from a print and not a negative.

I remember the Kodak 127 cameras well though didn't actually own one. My father had an old box Brownie which took, I think, eight negatives 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" on 120 roll film but my first camera of my own was a Voigtlander Vito B 35mm camera which I bought in 1962 or 1963 secondhand with saved up pocket money of 」12 and which I still have and with which I took this picture which won me a prize in a local competition in 1964 at the age of 16!

What a beautiful clear shot of this little fellow (?lass) caught in the act of stealing your greenery.

The colours are very natural and clearly not oversaturated and it's as sharp as a pin. Presumably he must have stayed a while in this position for you to go and fetch your camera and change lenses.
