The poppy of wartime remembrance is the red corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas. This poppy is a common weed in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders Fields. It grows well on disturbed soil.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
~John McCrae, May 3, 1915

The verse above comes from a poem that is probably the most memorable war poem ever written. It was penned by a Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade on the day he buried his friend and former student, Lieut. Alexis Helmer, the culmination of seventeen horrific days of treating injured and dying men in the terrible battle of Ypres.

It wasn't until last night that I realized that I had taken this picture on the exact anniversary of the death of that soldier and fellow citizen, in the land where he had died.

Tech: This flower, found growing beside a railway track was shot on a very windy day; cropped, reduced for TL, framed and signed

It's an interesting topic, "most famous war poem". Into the ring I'd throw...

"THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD
AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM
NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN,
AND IN THE MORNING:
WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM."

Hi Silke, I have indeed seen the BBC presenters wear a red poppy on that day and it was only later that I knew why.
Beautiful to use that wild flower to remember.........

Hi Silke!

"...Coincidence is when Gods decides to remain anonymous...", perhaps he never wants us to forget the brave soldiers who laid their lives for us to breathe in freedom today; anyways we ourselves must remember them...this shot is not a coincidence its surely a timely tribute to all of them before the end of the day and forever!
Congrats and thanks for sharing!
Cheers!

Perfect dedication Silke
the flower is extremely symbolic. Your photo shows perfect details and colors..... every year I replace the veterans paper poppy in my car... to support our local Veterans... forget me not in the spring and the red poppy in the fall....

Hello Silke,

What a strange co-incidence!
You have posted a beautiful token for Remembrance Sunday! I am wearing my poppy in my jacket as I type this message.
I love the deeply sentimental poem that you have included with your notes!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Many thanks for your warm comments on Red for Remembrance!

Now this time of year I tend to forget my 2 years of active duty and remember my AWOL...I did it with my mother's Quaker roots in mind. But I felt badly for my friends who were injured and one old music student who died over there...fortunately I still have one good old friend from back the. He was a Navy Seal in Nam...and came back to protest war..
Bob

Hi Silk
Very good composition and perspective. Clear, and sharp

Hi Silke

An appropriate upload for Rememberance Day. I remember these red poppies from primary school. Only they were red paper back then. Good sharpness & dof. Tfs!

My dear friend

This is absolutely beautiful The light shining on the poppy is perfect and the colours are vivid and bright. The choice and style of frame for this lovely poppey enhances the image perfectly.

TFS regards Helen

Hi Silke
I"m impressed that you managed to get such a good shot of a poppy. We were in France during poppy season this year and found the things almost impossible to capture. Being so small and fragile, they moved out of focus in the slightest breath of air. So well done! The note you've written is interesting - I hadn't understood the link between poppies and remembrance before.
cheers
Stephen
